How Many Goals Are Scored in a Football Match on Average?
Across the 5,617 finished matches that players predicted on CalledItMate between 22 March and 30 September 2026, 17,315 goals were scored, an average of 3.08 per match. Fans predicted an average of 3.00 goals across 22,221 score predictions, so on the headline number they were almost spot on.
The average hides a lot, though. Fans got the total about right and the shape badly wrong.
Why 3.08 and not the figure you have heard
You will often see a figure closer to 2.7 goals a game quoted for top leagues. The 5,617 matches here are whatever CalledItMate players chose to predict, which spans top flights, lower divisions, cups and competitions from all over the world, and some of those produce more goals. The Premier League games in the sample averaged fewer: 342 goals in 122 matches, 2.80 per game. So the honest answer to "how many goals in a football match on average" is that it depends on the competition, and three is a fair rough figure for a broad mix.
Home sides scored 9,627 of the goals (1.71 a game) and away sides 7,688 (1.37 a game).
How many goals matches actually had
Here is how the 5,617 matches split by total goals, next to how the 22,221 predictions split:
- 0 goals: 341 matches (6.1%), 266 predictions (1.2%)
- 1 goal: 882 matches (15.7%), 1,347 predictions (6.1%)
- 2 goals: 1,173 matches (20.9%), 5,110 predictions (23.0%)
- 3 goals: 1,249 matches (22.2%), 8,779 predictions (39.5%)
- 4 goals: 861 matches (15.3%), 5,247 predictions (23.6%)
- 5 goals: 536 matches (9.5%), 1,198 predictions (5.4%)
- 6 goals: 273 matches (4.9%), 216 predictions (1.0%)
- 7 or more: 302 matches (5.4%), 58 predictions (0.3%)
Three goals was the most common total, but it happened in fewer than a quarter of matches. Fans picked it in nearly four predictions out of ten.
Fans get the average right and the spread wrong
Real football is lumpy. Plenty of games finish 0-0 or 1-0, and plenty turn into 5-1s. Predictions cluster in the middle instead: 2, 3 or 4 goals made up 86.1% of predictions (19,136 of 22,221) but only 58.4% of matches (3,283 of 5,617).
Both tails get squeezed. Matches with one goal or none were 21.8% of games (1,223) but 7.3% of predictions (1,613). Matches with five or more were 19.8% of games (1,111) and 6.6% of predictions (1,472). The two errors cancel out, which is why the average looks so accurate.
The same thing shows up on the classic over/under line. 3,221 matches (57.3%) had three or more goals, while 15,498 predictions (69.7%) did.
Only 4,417 predictions (19.9%) got the total number of goals exactly right. 8,847 (39.8%) predicted too many and 8,957 (40.3%) too few, an almost even split, which again is the average looking good while individual calls miss.
The Premier League, in this sample
In the 122 Premier League matches, the 342 goals worked out at 2.80 a game. The 1,339 predictions on those matches added up to 4,059 goals, 3.03 per prediction, so in this sample fans expected more goals from the top flight than it delivered. With 122 matches that is an observation about these games, not a verdict on the league.
What this means if you predict scores
- Three goals is a sensible middle, not a likely result. The most common total still missed in more than three matches out of four.
- Do not rule out the quiet games. 0-0 and 1-0 type matches are far more common than predictions suggest. Our scorelines study shows 0-0 got about a fifth of its fair share of predictions.
- Know the competition. Goal rates differ between leagues, so a figure from one league will not carry over to another.

How we counted
- Window: matches that kicked off from 22 March to 30 September 2026 inclusive (UTC), finished, and have a recorded final score. Data read on 1 October 2026.
- Excluded: internal test matches, house accounts run by CalledItMate, and duplicate accounts merged into another account.
- Matches are the finished matches that received at least one score prediction, each counted once. Predictions are each player's final predicted score for a match. Goals are the recorded final score, so penalty shootouts are not counted.
- One prediction of a 50-goal match is included. Leaving it out does not change the average predicted goals, which stays at 3.00.
- This is the same sample as our scorelines study. CalledItMate players are a self-selected group of football fans, and the competition mix follows what they chose to predict.
