League One is the third tier of English football and one of the busiest, most unpredictable leagues anywhere. It regularly holds clubs with major histories and huge supports working their way back up: Leicester City, Sheffield Wednesday, Luton Town and Reading have all played at this level recently, alongside sides making their first climb into the Football League's upper half. The season is a long one, with a Saturday-and-midweek rhythm and a fixture list that punishes thin squads. Form swings hard, favourites drop points constantly, and that volatility makes League One one of the more rewarding competitions for correct score predictions.

League One took its current name in 2004, when the Football League renamed its divisions, but the tier itself carries decades of history as the old Third and Second Division. Two clubs go up automatically and the rest of the promotion places are settled by a play-off that ends at Wembley, a match routinely described as one of the most valuable in football because of what promotion to the Championship is worth. At the other end the relegation fight into League Two is just as unforgiving, so meaningful fixtures run from August right through to the final week.
