Half Time Full Time Results: How Often Does the Half-Time Leader Win?
The team leading at half-time wins a little under four times in five. Of the 5,441 finished matches with a recorded half-time score that players predicted on CalledItMate between 22 March and 30 September 2026, 3,293 had a leader at the break. That side won 2,560 of them (77.7%), drew 462 (14.0%) and lost 271 (8.2%).
Here are the full half time full time results, the most common half-time score, and what happens when it is level at the break.
Half time full time results: all nine outcomes
Half time full time results are written as the half-time result, then the full-time result: H for a home lead or win, D for level, A for an away lead or win. Across the 5,441 matches:
- H/H: 1,556 matches (28.6%)
- A/A: 1,004 matches (18.5%)
- D/H: 856 matches (15.7%)
- D/D: 715 matches (13.1%)
- D/A: 577 matches (10.6%)
- A/D: 248 matches (4.6%)
- H/D: 214 matches (3.9%)
- A/H: 145 matches (2.7%)
- H/A: 126 matches (2.3%)
Home team ahead at half-time and still ahead at full time was the single most common outcome, more than one match in four. A full turnaround, where the team behind at the break went on to win, happened in 271 matches (5.0%).
At half-time, level is the most common state
At the break, 2,148 matches (39.5%) were level, 1,896 (34.8%) had the home side ahead and 1,397 (25.7%) had the away side ahead.
The most common half-time scores were:
- 0-0: 1,515 matches (27.8%)
- 1-0: 1,058 matches (19.4%)
- 0-1: 825 matches (15.2%)
- 1-1: 564 matches (10.4%)
- 2-0: 411 matches (7.6%)
- 0-2: 285 matches (5.2%)
- 2-1: 186 matches (3.4%)
- 1-2: 160 matches (2.9%)
So the most common half-time score was 0-0, even though only about 6% of matches finish that way (see the most common final scores). Of the 1,515 matches that were goalless at half-time, just 331 (21.8%) stayed 0-0.
How often does the half-time leader win?
It depends a lot on the size of the lead:
- One-goal lead: 2,244 matches. The leader won 1,582 (70.5%), drew 413 (18.4%) and lost 249 (11.1%).
- Two-goal lead: 780 matches. The leader won 712 (91.3%), drew 48 (6.2%) and lost 20 (2.6%).
- Three goals or more: 269 matches. The leader won 266 (98.9%), with one draw and two defeats.
A one-goal half-time lead was turned into a draw or a defeat almost three times in ten. A two-goal lead was close to safe.
Where the lead is held matters too. Home teams leading at the break won 1,556 of 1,896 (82.1%). Away teams leading at the break won 1,004 of 1,397 (71.9%), so away leads were more often pegged back. That matches the home edge in how often home teams win.
What happens when it is level at half-time
Of the 2,148 matches level at the break:
- Home win: 856 (39.9%)
- Draw: 715 (33.3%)
- Away win: 577 (26.9%)
A level game at half-time ended level only a third of the time. In the 1,515 matches that were 0-0 at the break, the home side went on to win 590 (38.9%), 520 (34.3%) were draws and the away side won 405 (26.7%).
More goals come after the break
These 5,441 matches had 16,731 goals in total. 7,091 (42.4%) came before half-time and 9,640 (57.6%) after it. The second half had more goals than the first in 2,496 matches (45.9%), the first half had more in 1,622 (29.8%), and 1,323 (24.3%) were even. So a quiet first half does not tell you much about how the game ends.
The Premier League, in this sample
The Premier League part is small: 119 matches with a half-time score. 71 had a leader at the break, and that side won 53 (74.6%). That is in line with the overall picture, but with so few matches it is a rough guide only.
What this means if you predict scores
A half-time lead of one goal is far from settled, and a level game at the break still ends with a winner two times in three. If you are watching a match live, the second half is where most goals arrive, which is when calls on the next goalscorer and the next team to score get interesting. Our guide on how to predict football scores covers the pre-match side.
How we counted
- Window: matches that kicked off from 22 March to 30 September 2026 inclusive (UTC), finished, and have a recorded final score. Data read on 1 October 2026.
- Excluded: internal test matches, house accounts run by CalledItMate, and duplicate accounts merged into another account.
- Matches are the finished matches that received at least one score prediction, each counted once. Of those 5,617, the 5,441 with a recorded half-time score that fits the final score are used here.
- Full time is the recorded final score, so penalty shootouts are not counted. Goals in extra time count towards the second half.
- This is the same sample as our other data articles. CalledItMate players are a self-selected group of football fans, and the competition mix follows what they chose to predict.
