How to playVélez pushed forward after the break, probing down the flanks and looking to work openings through the centre, but the visitors absorbed the pressure with composure. The turning point arrived in the 71st minute when Carlos Izquierdoz punished the hosts with a clinical finish, the experienced defender rising to convert and hand Lanús the lead against the run of play. It was the kind of moment that underlined everything about the visitors' game plan — patient, organised and ruthlessly effective when the opportunity came.
Vélez threw numbers forward in the closing stages but found the Lanús backline resolute, and despite extended stoppage time the hosts could not find the equaliser. The three points head south with the visitors, who continue to demonstrate the defensive solidity that makes them difficult to break down in this competition.
