Both results came in the opening round of this UEFA Nations League campaign, and both sides now need a response when Latvia play Cyprus on Monday, 28 September 2026.

Latvia's loss to Armenia was the heavier of the two. They didn't score, and Armenia's two-goal margin was the largest defeat either side has taken in recent results. Cyprus at least got on the scoresheet against Montenegro before conceding twice themselves, going down 2-1 rather than being shut out.
Neither result was an isolated blip. Latvia's defeat continued a run that had already seen them lose back-to-back matches against Lithuania and the Faroe Islands at the Baltic Cup in June. Cyprus, under head coach Akis Mantzios, have now failed to win seven of their last eight competitive matches, a stretch that included finishing fourth in their FIFA World Cup qualifying group.
Cyprus travel to face Latvia carrying a genuinely poor record on the road. They have won just one of their last seven competitive away matches since October 2024, a run that stretches back through most of their World Cup qualifying campaign. That single number does more to explain their recent slide than any one result does on its own.
Before the Armenia defeat, Latvia's most recent Nations League form had actually been solid. They beat Gibraltar 1-0 in March, then beat them 1-0 again a few days later, keeping a clean sheet both times. It's the only unbeaten spell either side has managed in the results available here, and it's now three matches behind them.
