FC Porto v Manchester City kicks off at 20:00 BST on Tuesday 8 September 2026 at the Estádio do Dragão, and Amazon Prime Video has the match in the UK. It is the first Champions League game of the season for both clubs, and Maresca's first European match in charge of City.
Does Porto's defensive record hold up?
Only partly. The five wins in our archive all came in Liga Portugal Betclic, against Alverca, Rio Ave, Arouca, Académico Viseu and Moreirense. Four of them ended without Porto conceding. The one that didn't was the most recent, a 2-1 win over Moreirense on 4 September, which is the only time in five matches Porto have been within a goal of dropping points.
The run is real, and Francesco Farioli's side are scoring freely at the other end. But none of those five opponents have anything like City's attack, and Porto are back in the Champions League proper for the first time since 2023-24.
Our archive has no previous meeting between these two, so the head-to-head has to come from further back. The clubs met twice in the 2020-21 Champions League group stage, City winning 3-1 in Manchester before a 0-0 draw in Porto, and before that City won a Europa League tie 6-1 on aggregate in 2012. Porto have never beaten City in a competitive fixture.
Manchester City's form: seven goals in three league games
City have scored seven and conceded two in the Premier League this season, and the pattern has been comfortable rather than spectacular. They beat Bournemouth 2-1 on 23 August, took Crystal Palace apart 4-1 at Selhurst Park five days later, then ground out a 1-0 over Coventry City on 5 September.
The blot is the Community Shield. Arsenal beat them 3-0 on 16 August, and pre-season ended with a 2-4 loss to Inter and a 3-1 win over Atlético Madrid. So the sample says City score against most sides and have been beaten heavily by the one elite team they have faced. Porto are somewhere between those two categories.
Maresca, speaking before the game, called the Dragão a hard place to go and said Porto had started the season well. He did not sound like a manager expecting an easy night.
Team news
Jeremy Doku and Nico O'Reilly were left out of Manchester City's travelling squad. Doku has a calf problem that has kept him out of all three league games, and O'Reilly hurt his back in the warm-up before the Coventry match. Matheus Nunes has said he is fully fit after an ankle issue.
Porto's list is longer. Jan Bednarek is suspended, serving a one-match ban carried over from a red card in last season's Europa League. Striker Samu Aghehowa is a long-term absentee with a cruciate ligament injury, and Victor Froholdt was knocked unconscious against Moreirense and taken to hospital. Vasco Sousa, Oskar Pietuszewski, Gabriel Mec and Zaidu Sanusi are also out with leg and groin injuries.
Losing Bednarek from the defence that has conceded once all season is the change that matters most.
