Ipswich go into the game under Gary O'Neil, who got his first league win in charge with a 2-1 result over Sunderland, club-record signing Emersonn scoring on his Premier League debut and Jack Clarke settling it in the 90th minute. New arrivals Abdoul Ouattara and Julio Enciso are in the squad, with Ouattara still working towards full match fitness.

Liverpool have a longer injury list. Conor Bradley remains out following knee surgery, Hugo Ekitike is sidelined with a ruptured Achilles suffered in April, and Federico Chiesa is unavailable after a pre-season injury. Giovanni Leoni, out since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament on his debut last season, has a return date pencilled in for this month. Joe Gomez has also been missing after going off early in a pre-season friendly against Sunderland.

Recent form

Ipswich's Premier League form has been mixed. They beat Sunderland 2-1 on 22 August but were then beaten 5-2 away at Manchester United on 30 August. In between they won 3-1 at home to Leicester City in the EFL Cup.

Liverpool's league results have been closer. They drew 2-2 at home to Nottingham Forest on 29 August, having drawn 2-2 away at Newcastle United on 23 August. Both matches saw them concede twice, and neither finished as a win.

Pre-season told a similar story for both clubs. Ipswich won three of their four warm-up matches, including a 4-2 win away at 1. FC Union Berlin and a 3-0 win over Rayo Vallecano. Liverpool's pre-season was less settled: a 4-2 defeat to Leeds United, a 3-2 loss to AS Monaco and a goalless draw with Como.
